The owner of the Stealth Gray Focus RS traded his Viper for it. At the time, he had a Fiesta ST and the Viper. He enjoys mountain driving, and found that the Viper sucked at it, so he always took the FiST. He said, and I quote: “Everytime I drove the Viper, I knew I would have had more fun in the Fiesta.” So he traded it for a FWD biased hatch that he uses for his mountain runs, and dailies a FiST.

So there is some real world opinion from someone who did have a “better” RWD car.

Kinja'd!!!

Speaking of wrong wheel drive hatches, the FiST is getting Stratified soon.

One data point does not a trend make.

Hate my fwd mini because even with “sports” suspension and expensive tires I am constantly fighting the damn thing for traction.

Doesn’t the viper handle like a sack of potatoes anyway?

Kinja'd!!!1

Not really. It handles like a lightweight, powerful RWD car. It’s fun, just when you are breaking 3 digits, which isn’t really doable on most tight mountain roads.

There are three digits now?!?!

Yes. As a Toyota owner, I understand that is a hard to believe figure, but it is achievable.

It just wasn’t fun on a good road. It required hitting triple digits to be nearly as much fun as his FiST on the same roads. And he does this every weekend, and has owned many cars. It was also broken all of the time. 5 minutes after he traded it in, it broke.

Just to play devil’s advocate, that could be just as much because of power management as drive wheels. It’s likely that said guy could have had a Miata and had the same realization.

I guess the Taco could go 100... Not a vehicle you want to do even the slightest turning of the wheel at high speeds.

Nah, he likes Vipers. That’s why I brought this up. He drives a RWD Chrysler product.

I mean, I’d assume he’d like Vipers if he owned one. I’m saying if he had the Miata instead of the Fiesta, he’d have the same realization.

Nah. Miatas are great when they are super modded, but stock they are slow and rolly. I get them, but I get them as moddable platforms.

Shit, no thanks to that. Fastest car I’ve been was at 110mph in a 90s Accord, downhill.

Fastest I’ve ever driven was 90-something in the Celica. Damn thing feels like it’s lifting off.

I was more talking about older ones. But the Skyactive engine is dull. They are also about $5k more.

I have several RWD cars and have had FWD and AWD cars. I would never want my RWD cars to be FWD. Now, my Abarth was a lot more fun to drive than my wife’s BMW despite being slower, but it wasn’t because it was FWD. That made it less fun.

In the case of this example, the dude had a Viper. Somehow I don’t think the price matters. And we’re also pretty far afield here, the point is that both the FiST and the Miata are lightweight cars that are better on mountain roads than a Viper. Personal preference does not an FWD/RWD debate make.

Ha, well it is a Chrysler product. That makes sense though, being able to ring a car completely out is fun. I am also no where near tight mountain roads.

The roads in that area are prime for a hatch. Extremely tight and no room for oversteer.

Not only is this subjective and anecdotal, but you used the wrong “your” in the tag. Evidence dismissed!!!

I’d like to stop seeing people circle jerking the RS/ST twins so hard but hey, whatever floats thy boat.

I can see where a Viper would be less fun in the mountains. Regardless, if FWD was so great why did he buy an AWD hatchback?

Here’s another real world opinion:

I had a highly modified Focus ST and it doesn’t hold a candle to how well my Camaro gets around the track with its stock suspension. Even with all the modifications done to the ST it was still twitchy around corners. Oversteer in FWD is a bitch, something easily manageable in a RWD.

That said, idk what kind of Viper your friend had but I’m pretty sure I would enjoy a Focus RS more than the gen 1-3 Vipers. They really aren’t that good at all.

The Viper was never made for short mountain courses. It would be a hand full.....I different kind of white knuckle fun.
